Careers In Related Fields

Careers in related fields are more general and may include such specialties as educators, classroom teachers, college professors, county extension agents, state and federal extension workers/clothing specialists, adult education teachers, and consumer educators also called educational representatives. There is a limited amount of information on these careers as specialties of the sewing industry. The limited information found is related to the sewing industry in an indirect way.



State And Federal Extension Worker/Clothing Specialist:

Duties: Extension specialists develop educational materials related to a wide range of consumer concerns. These areas could include cleaning clothing soiled with pesticides, disposing of outdated cleaning aids, the recycling of textiles in an environmentally safe manner, or the storing of heirloom textiles. They may also answer consumer questions on a wide range of topics, assess special needs of those in their geographic areas and develop programs to meet those needs.

Qualifications: An understanding of textiles is essential for these positions.

Education: A high school diploma at the minimum. Additional education may be required in the field of education and textiles.

Consumer Educator:

Duties: This career may involve educating other employees of a company in order for them to better understand the consumer. They may also be employed to write brochures describing products, and develop educational materials such as brochures, write instructional books on the proper use of a specific piece of machinery, and produce teaching aids such as videotapes or CDs. They may also teach workshops to consumers or sales representatives and deal with consumer questions about the use of a product and they may also handle consumer complaints.

Qualifications: An understanding of textiles is essential for these positions.

Education: A high school diploma at the minimum. Additional education may be required in the field of education and textiles.
