Janome Sewing Machines - A Company of Firsts

The Janome sewing machines company was founded in the 1920s. The first innovation was the development of the round bobbin. According to their website on the “About Janome” page, they were the first company to develop a computerized sewing machine for the home sewer in 1979. The next first was professional style embroidery for the home sewer in 1990.

So, this can be said to be a company of firsts in the sewing machine industry.

In addition to their Janome sewing machines, quilting machines, embroidery machines, and sergers, the site has a Learning Center and as part of that center there is a link appropriately called “Useful Links” that presents design ideas and links to some of the many vendors that provide fabrics, notions and supplies and sewing information. They also provide links to some of the hosts of PBS programs, such as Kaye’s Quilting Friends, one of the quilting how-to programs on PBS.

They also have links to the American Sewing Guild and the Home Sewing Association at sewing.org. So, in addition to their products the company offers assistance in the form of links to other sites to help the home sewer.

On another note, not all of the brochures for their machines are downloadable pdf brochures. In order to obtain a brochure on some of the products, you actually have to fill out a brochure request form. There are downloadable brochures for other products. A big plus is that there are downloadable manuals for the machines in pdf format right on the specifications page.

One section of their machines that I found particularly interesting was the professional machines. These machines are stated to have features that are popular in the area of industrial sewing built into them for the home sewer to meet their professional needs. These are machines that would be built with the toughness required for the sewer that sews for a living not just as a hobby.

The professional series consists of not just one type of machine, but sewing machines, quilting machines, embroidery machines and sergers, presenting a nice mix for whatever one’s sewing business is.

These Janome sewing machines products and educational information can be found at janome.com

Janome machines are also widely sold at such places as Hancock Fabrics, and online at allbrands.com Whether sewing as a hobby or to create one’s own wardrobe and home décor or starting a sewing business, this brand has much to offer.
